From Africa into Europe, and from Europe into Africa

ScaleGate programmes — apply through VentureOS

ScaleGate backs companies moving from Africa into Europe and from Europe into Africa, with an operating team in the Netherlands and its African hub in Lagos. VentureOS is how you apply: choose where you are today, and we will meet you at that stage.

Build and scale

I have an idea or very early project

Zero to Gate

Turn an idea, concept or pre-MVP project into a venture that can be tested, explained and built: problem, customer and market; proposition and business model; validation plan; brand narrative and founder materials; product or MVP direction; milestones and roadmap.

I run an existing startup

Gate to Scale

Hands-on help in the part of the company that most needs it — strategy, product and technology, brand, go-to-market and partnerships, capital, grants and investment readiness, or pilot design. A tailored engagement, not a fixed curriculum.

My established company is ready to grow internationally, including into Europe

Scale

For established companies with a proven offer, especially those built in emerging markets: market selection and entry, customers and partners, local operating and ecosystem access, international positioning, funding and institutional pathways — with ScaleGate's team in Europe during execution.

Apply through VentureOS

Build in Europe

I want to build my company in the Netherlands

Dutch Startup Visa

For innovative non-EU founders who will build and run their company in the Netherlands. ScaleGate builds the company with you and prepares the application as part of that work. ScaleGate is not a visa or immigration agency; RVO advises and the IND decides.

Impact initiatives

I have potential but not the resources to start

Venture Philanthropy

Free or fully sponsored venture building, mentorship and connections for young people who would not normally have access to entrepreneurial opportunities. Selection looks at potential and commitment, not money.

Apply through VentureOS
I am a creative or cultural practitioner

Creative and Cultural Industries

For artists, filmmakers, designers, performers, craftspeople and heritage practitioners: the structures, business models and partnerships that let creative work survive, grow and provide a livelihood — without commercialising culture at any cost.

Into Africa

My company wants to build or scale in an African market

Scale in Africa

For founders and international companies entering or expanding in African markets: one defined market and a clear commercial objective — market focus, local validation, customers and partners, entry execution.

How a ScaleGate engagement works

  1. Apply through VentureOS: where the company is today and what needs to change.
  2. Review: stage, need and fit — with a written answer within ten working days.
  3. Scope: if there is a fit, we agree the pathway, priorities, working model, outcomes and commercial terms in writing.
  4. Begin: ScaleGate assembles the team, in Africa and in Europe, and starts the agreed work.

Funding or partnering a programme?

Foundations, institutions, companies and donors design founder programmes, challenges, market access programmes and venture studios with ScaleGate — and sponsor young founders through Venture Philanthropy.

Partner with us

Applying does not create a service agreement or guarantee acceptance; work starts only once scope and terms are agreed in writing. ScaleGate is not a visa or immigration agency, and does not guarantee positive RVO advice or an IND residence permit. VentureOS is operated by ScaleGate Africa, part of ScaleGate.

The programme

About VentureOS

VentureOS began as a gathering of tech minds in Lagos. It is now ScaleGate Africa's front door — where founders apply to ScaleGate's programmes — and the name of the campus where its cohorts live and build. It brings founders, investors, industry and government together around ventures that solve real problems and can sell beyond Africa.

The VentureOS Center

A 6–12 month residency in Lagos for 12–20 innovators per cohort: housing, labs, studios and mentors, moving from problem immersion to prototype, pilot and a company.

VentureOS meetings

Regular gatherings in Lagos where founders meet ScaleGate, investors and partners — the front door to everything else in the programme.

ScaleGate, investment and Europe

Applications to ScaleGate's programmes, equity, debt and grant funding arranged through ScaleGate's network, and a route to grow in Europe through ScaleGate's team in the Netherlands for ventures proven in Lagos.

What we are about

Physical and cultural frontiers, not only apps

Most young African entrepreneurs equate innovation with software. We point founders at the physical and cultural frontiers where Africa has the biggest gaps and the strongest global pull — and every cohort mixes all three pillars.

Make

Water, energy, petroleum and petrochemicals, waste-to-value, cooling and the built environment, health diagnostics.

Grow

Production, processing and storage, natural and organic farming, packaged Nigerian food and packaging for export.

Create

Fashion, music, art, authorship and publishing, theatre, stage and screen production, media, design and tourism.

  • Founders own their IP. The center helps register patents, designs and copyright.
  • No upfront fees for residents. Carrying costs run on an innovator tab owed by the venture, repaid from revenue — and forgiven if there is none within three years.
  • Prove it in Lagos. Solutions are tested in the hardest operating conditions, with real users and partners in the field.
  • Pillars feed each other. Natural dyes for fashion, farm waste to biogas, creatives who tell the story of every product.

Campuses

The campus

VentureOS Center, Lagos

In design

A live-work-build campus: one office building becomes the Build Hub for technical, business and music work, and the neighbouring buildings become residences for innovators from across Africa. The campus runs to a zero-failure standard for power and water, and is the first customer and live demonstration site for its own ventures' technology.

Capacity: About 15 apartments in phase 1, about 30 when the residences extend to four buildings; cohorts of 12–20 resident innovators

Opening: Cohort 0 in mid-2027

As designed

  • Build Hub: open coworking, team rooms, quiet pods, call booths, boardroom and a 60–100 seat event and pitch hall that converts to a black-box theatre
  • Maker lab: 3D printers, laser cutter, small CNC, electronics benches
  • Water, chemistry and fuels lab with fume extraction and gas detection
  • Energy test bay and cold-storage development yard
  • Pilot food-processing unit, food-testing lab and packaging studio
  • Soundproofed music studio and rehearsal room; photo and video studio
  • Residences: studio and one-bedroom apartments, shared dining and lounges, laundry and study room
  • Art studio, fashion atelier and writers' room; lounges that become exhibition space
  • One kitchen serving the restaurant, café, members and residents
  • Power: grid, solar with batteries and generator backup; water: borehole with on-site treatment

Applications

Apply

One application can ask for more than one of these — for example a residency and equity together. Save as you go; nothing is sent until you press Send.

Applying is free, and always will be. VentureOS never charges founders to apply, to be reviewed or to present.
Every application gets a written answer within ten working days of the initial submission. An introduction, customer, grant, investment, market entry or residence permit is never guaranteed.

How we select

Two partners score every initial submission independently, after declaring any conflict of interest.

Founder — 30%
Commitment, ability, and evidence of what you have built before.
Problem fit — 20%
A real problem, especially in food, water, energy and health.
Traction — 20%
What exists today, and who uses it or pays for it.
European leverage — 15%
Why Europe, specifically, could matter to the venture.
Scalability — 10%
Room to grow well beyond where you are now.
Integrity
Honesty and clean legal standing are a condition, not a score.

VentureOS Center residencies are also assessed on problem, ability, commitment, solution potential, collaboration and pan-African reach.

How it works

  1. 1
    Initial submission
Tell us about the venture and what you are asking for, with your pitch deck and business plan. For equity, show how you arrived at your valuation.
  2. 2
    Screening and a first meeting
If we would like to proceed, we invite you to meet us — in person at our Victoria Island office or by video — through your VentureOS portal.
  3. 3
    Full documentation
Financial statements, tax returns, the business background questionnaire and the rest, plus any follow-up documents agreed at our meetings.
  4. 4
Review, challenge or due diligence, committee
Two independent reviewers who declare any conflict of interest; a practical challenge for residencies or due diligence for funding; then the committee decides.
